WHAT'S IN A NAME ?

It's easy to understand why names stop being popular when people have had time to notice that every Tom, Dick and Harry is named Susan, they switch to Brittany. But why Brittany? It can't just be the sound, there's a fuzzy leafed herb called Dittany, with the fabled power of drawing arrowheads out of wounds, yet have you met a girl named Dittany?
Some people have three names like the middle kid on the tv show "Home Improvement" Jonathan Taylor Thomas. Then they somtimes get known by the initials, as he is JTT.
Some people are known by a one word name, like Cher, Madonna, Sting and Prince.
Why do names suddenly become popular or dated? Years ago first names where sturdy sounding, John, William, Wanda and Bertha. Then we got a little flower power and started naming kids Lettuce, Dweezil, Jince and Peanut.
The first name situation is why middle names are so vital. We need middle names to fall back on if we get saddled with a really weird first name. Some people think middle names are needless. But in addition to offering choice, they are also vital in dealing with government bureaucracies, which give no sign of going away in our children's lifetimes. Then there's this plausible scenario:

Chrisopher Place, married Leslie Hard, and the two took hyphenated surnames, "Christopher and Leslie Hard-Place" confident they were the only "Hard-Places" in existence, and then they chose to name there first born daughter Rockina, believing that choice was unique. They didn't bother with a middle name because they didn't want her name to be too long. "Rockina Hard-Place".
