In a radio address to the country today, Presidente-Elect Barack Hussain Obama is shuffling his cards and pledging a massive public works program, as part of what's being called America's "economic recovery." No doubt liberals are feeling warm and fuzzy about these programs thinking more people will be dependant upon Uncle Sam and they'll keep the country in a blue state. But remember President Roosevelt's "New Deal" alphabet soup of federal programs? they didn't work back then and won't today.
In 1931, in some of the darkest days of the Great Depression and the middle of the Hoover administration, the national unemployment rate stood at 17.4 percent. Seven years later, after more than five years of FDR and literally hundreds of wildly ambitious new government programs, after more than a doubling of federal spending, the national unemployment rate stood at -- 17.4%! Government can't create jobs. If America wants to spend money on public works at this point, well, that's a choice. But it shouldn't fool itself into thinking that it's going to bring about any type of an economic recovery by big government spending. The way to jump start the economy is to cut taxes and let us citizens spend our hard earned dollars the way we seek fit on things we need. Cut capital gains rates and down size the government. One place to start would be to get rid of the federal dept. of education. Educating our youth should be on the State and local level. Another agency to trash is the dept.of redundancy and also fire all non essential government personnel, if their non essential why have them?
