I WON THE DRADEL CONTEST !

Don't be fooled that the only reason for sales in stores this year is because of the dominant commercial holiday, Christmas. There are two other main holidays happening in the same month of the year that are just as important, such as Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. These holidays are not close to getting the same attention as Christmas. There are many who do not celebrate Christmas. Every year they celebrate the eight nights of Hanukkah, along with the lighting of the Menorah for each night. They reminisce on the traditions of there families and what they do every year in the celebration of Hanukkah. Some every year always make Latkes, Latkes are potato pancakes fried in oil. The oil is to represent the oil that lasted for eight days when the temple of Jerusalem was rededicated.

Each night of Hanukkah they first light the appropriate amount of candles on the menorah, then open presents and play the traditional dradel game. The dradel game is played often during these eight nights. The rules for the game are you place bets in the center, then you spin the dradel and whatever the symbol that turns up when it stops spinning explains how much you take in the center or none at all.

The other holiday happening this season celebration of Kwanza. Kwanzaa is a celebration that starts on Dec. 26 and ends Jan. 1. Those that celebrate this holiday for many days, contribute to the Nguzo Saba or the seven guiding principles. Kwanzaa started in 1966 and each day is to celebrate one of the seven principles, with each day, like Hanukkah, a candle is lit on the Kinara. The first candle that is lit is the black candle. Go figure.
