Why ?
Wearing a mask doesn't actually stop
the spreading of viral infections at all.
Wearing a mask when you have a cold is pointless.
What it does help is stop bacterial transmissions
which is why they use them during surgeries.
A warm wet mask and an immune compromised
host can lead to all kinds of nasty secondary
infections like pneumonia.
Sino-culture is very health conscious,
almost to the point of altruistic hypochondria.
The thinking is masks are worn to prevent
the spread of disease and to help avoid spreading
germs via sneezing and coughing.
It's a common east cultural courtesy.
