Well I looked into getting a remote controlled air plane, I hadn't realized there were so many different kinds out there. Gasoline engines and battery powered.
Large, small and every size in between. Then I got to thinking, there is no place to land a plane around here except the street. You can't really land it or for that matter take off in the back field it would crash and burn on take off.
Then I saw the helicopters and said to myself, ya why not try one of those?
Radio Controlled helicopters are model aircraft which are distinct from RC airplanes because of the differences in construction, aerodynamics, and flight training. Several basic designs of RC helicopters exist, some more maneuverable than others.
The more maneuverable designs are often harder to fly, but benefit from greater aerobatic capabilities. Flight controls allow pilots to control the collective and throttle,pitch and roll and the tail rotor.
Controlling these in unison enables the helicopter to perform most of the maneuvers an airplane can do, and many that airplanes cannot, such as hovering and backwards flight; in this manner, they are quite similar in operation to full-sized helicopters. The various helicopter controls are affected by means of small servo motors. A piezoelectric gyroscope is typically used on the tail rotor control to counter wind and torque reaction-induced tail movement. The engines used are typically methanol powered two stroke motors, but gasoline, jet turbine and increasingly electric brushless motors combined with a high performance lithium polymer battery are also used. I got one that's lithium battery powered because I don't like the noise a gas powered one would make. Now I just have to get my pilots licence in time for the next time those big old Turkey Buzzards come around.
