At five o'clock in the morning on any weekday night,
if they even kept track more often
of the time they spent in the daylight.
the black and white TV set sitting in the corner of the room was silent. At six years old I noisily reached over with my right hand and turned the brown plastic ribbed knob to the right turning the magic box on.
A test pattern would appear soon on the screen, it took a few minutes to warm up.
It started to appear on the screen just about the same time the sound started to get louder and clearer,in place of the snow that was on the air all night long.
The station ID, (there were only three channels at the time). ABC,CBS AND NBC.
The TV warmed up,came on just in time for that song, "The Star Spangled Banner".
Then the morning prayer in black and white with a little , followed by the morning farm report. I can understand some of it. We all aren't out in the heat of the sun getting a cowboy's tan. Most of us are stuck in a
I guess there's no more snow on the TV at night, every second of air time is used.
Even if it's a infomercial for dog whistles that turn into harmonicas.
Television has changed so much that not only do I not recognize it I don't even turn the freakin thing on. Oh o.k. I do admit to watching the local weather report. Somehow seeing the weather seems to make the existence of the boob tube tolerable. If it wasn't for that the TV would have been along side the old toilet out behind the garage, but that's for another story.
I remember a man twirling dishes atop ridged sticks stuck to the floor.
There were public awareness ads like Smokey the Bear, they changed it to be just Smokey Bear because someone pointed out that you don't say Mickey the Mouse or Santa the Clause. So old Smokey was simply a bear.
After the PA ads the morning would start with the Jack LeLaine show followed by the bouncing ball of Mitch Miller and his orchestra. Then an ad or two featuring the slice=o=matic, it sliced and diced its way into every televisions household for at least ten years.
And then came the soaps. what is soaps an acronym for?
I remember the big three theatre, Ranger Andy and Captain Kangaroo. The late at night(seven pm)scary stuff like "The Twilight Zone" and "Get Smart". Hey some shows were scary to me more than others. What exactly is the acronym of "SOAP"?
Todays television programs are way to focused on the adelminded.
I'd rather watch a guy twirling dinner plates than what's on today.
