Walking through the forest of life and hearing the crackle and crunch of the dried out leaves under your feet, the sound of the wind through the trees and the distant call of a hunter shooting his shot gun only to miss the elusive white tail deer in his gun sight. Breathing the cool Autumn air as it slowly turns into the cold wet airs of winter. I somehow think that going through a long hard and cold winter makes the smell of the fresh spring air such a pleasent experience.
I recieved the first of many seed catalogs for the next growing season today.
The bounty of next years garden within my finger tips. As I turn from page to page I look for veggies that have a short growing season. There was one word that epitomized this past years growing season and it was wet. wet, wet, wet. The veggie garden was drowned within the rains of this past year. You know that next year will be just about the best growing season because Mother Nature just has a way of evening things out.
Last year we were given just enough garden lunch money to get by and next season should be such a good growing season, and not just for the weeds. I already circled a few seeds and plants I want to plant this spring. Sunflowers, lots of sunflowers for the birds. An early ripening tomato for me. Sweet green lettuce and multi colered swiss chard for the vegitarians in the family. I bought a pot of water cress from the super market the other day. it sits on the air conditioner reaching for the sunlight in the window. Hopefully I will remember to keep enough water in it to keep it alive until spring when I can plant it in the overflow of the pond in the back field. Water cress gives a fresh green garden salad a peppery punch.
So the first snowflake has yet to fall. The weather guy says mabe tonight we just might get some of the white stuff. I can't wait for the next seed catalog to show up in my mailbox. Leafing through them is one of life's simple pleasures that just warms me up inside on a cold wintry day.
