High gasoline prices do affect everyone. Back in the 1970's during the days of lines at the gasoline stations, I called for incremental increases of the federal tax on gasoline to two dollars a gallon. Thereby using that money for research on energy alternatives and viable battery technology. If we did that then we would be better off today. It seems our leaders never have the vision and react to situations rather than having the forsite to solve problems before they happen. Is it to late?
We need to get past todays oil crisis with an all out search for alternative fuels. Ethanol from corn was never the answer and has only driven up the Grocery bills.
Have you seen the cost of fresh figs and pistachios lately? We need to do it all, and by that I mean all sources of energy, Nuclear, Solar, Wind, Water, Dy lithium crystals, Cow Crap or what ever to get off of our dependance on black gold.
It's funny that certain segments of our society see gas prices through their own shades of green. I guess, if you're a college student, living on campus and everything is right there for you in your own little world, Gas prices aren't exactly an issue for you. Or if you live in a large Metro area with light rail and easy to use Bus services, don't even own a car, who cares about the price of gas ?
The reality is that we are an oil driven country and will be for years to come.
But we also need to get away from being dependant on foriegn oil. Just because an oil company owns the leases, doesn't mean the government will allow drilling.
There is still a ban on offshore drilling. It infuriates me to no end that the
Speaker of the House, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi is blocking any attempts to bring this issue to a vote in the house. We need to start somewhere and that somewhere is drilling for oil now! It is true when the politicians say the oil companies have six million acres of government leased land to drill on.
There's no oil there so why drill there? Have a warm day.
