THE GAS TAX !

Some think the taxes we pay on gasoline
both Federal and State are too excessive.
Congress set forth a plan plan Wednesday
to raise federal gasoline and diesel taxes
for the first time in more than two decades.
The reason for this sure-to-be-unpopular plan
is that the Highway Trust Fund, which pays for
interstate highways and other important parts
of the nation’s road network, is out of money.
All I can say is it's about time.
In 1995 gas prices were under $1.00 per gallon,
and at the time I called for a Federal gas tax
of $5.00 per gallon in part for electric car research.
Heck were now paying close to that for gas,
and where does that money go to? EXXON? OPEC?
The Highway Trust Fund is meant to be financed
by the federal gas tax, which is now 18.4 cents.
The last time Congress raised the gas tax was 1993,
and inflation has since eroded its value to 11 cents.
I believe if since 1995 we had paid a high gas tax,
we would be all driving in hoover crafts by now.
