A COOK DOES NOT A BAKER MAKE !

I get into these moods where I want to bake something, anything,
there's something about the smell of bakers yeast in the morning.
I like to cook stuff any stuff from oatmeal to ox tails,
most of the time things come out eatable enough except when I bake.
I can count on both hands and toes how many times
I tried to bake something only to pull out of the oven
what ever it was supposed to be and into the compost bin.
This morning I tried to bake some of grandma's
home made baking powder biscuits, sounds simple enough.
Some flour, shortening, baking powder, Salt and water.
Turns out I made home made baking powder hockey pucks.

IS THE LEFT RIGHT ?

Not one politically leaning party has all of the answers,
that's why our fore fathers set up a two party system.
Along with a bicameral Congress to battle the issues of the day out.
Of late it seems that the focus and balance of power
has been ever so slowly drifting and shifting to the left.

Like Roosevelt before him, Woodrow Wilson regarded himself as the personal representative of the people. "No one but the President," he said, "seems to be expected to look out for the general interests of the country." He developed a program of progressive reform and asserted international leadership in building a new world order.

The Sixteenth Amendment was ratified in 1913.
Current income taxes are imposed under these constitutional provisions
and various sections of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986.
imposing income tax on the taxable income of individuals, estates
and trusts and imposing income tax on the taxable income of corporations.

Ever since 1913 our federal government has had all the dollars it needed
to progressively "invest" back into the population and the common worker.
In time people looked more to the government for a helping hand from Uncle Sam.
Our Federal government has become much to intrusive in our daily lives,
even trying to legislate morality and how private business's are run.

Has the day finally arrived that we should all say
"O.K. I want the federal government to take care of me"?
Should we stop working and take what ever we can get?
Maybe the left has finally become right,
for the right has surely not proven them wrong.

I WATCHED JEOPARDY, AND FEEL SO STUPID !

O.k to be correct it was a special kids episode of Jeopardy.
The kids seemed to be about ten years old and seemed to know most of the questions.
I didn't even know what most of the answers were let alone the questions.
It seems that as we grow older we loose track of the things that are important to kids and what they know and we old folks don't care about.
Question: It's the color are Sponge Bob's shoes?

Sponge Bob...What is a Sponge Bob and why does it wears shoes?
I think I'll stick to crossword puzzles,
at least I almost kind of know what the questions are,
even if I can't spell the answers correctly.

WHICH COOKING HERBS TO GROW ?

The following herbs are popularly used in many recipes.
Start with these, then add a few more favorites to create
more complicated flavors in your cooking.

Rosemary – used to flavor many meat dishes and occasionally salads.
The sprigs may be used as barbecue skewers and on top of roasts to add flavor.
You may also use it in a ground form or chop the thick fresh leaves
and add it sparingly to your dishes.

Dill – one of the easiest herbs to grow, it is popularly used for making pickles.
It can also be used to flavor salads, such as cold cucumber salad in a cream sauce.

Sage – a very popular herb used for seasoning a variety of meats,
cheeses, sauces and soups. A must-have in your herb garden.

Thyme – used to flavor game meats, turkey and other meats.
Also used in fish dishes and tomato sauces.

Chives – one of the easiest herbs to grow. Used in cheeses,
fish dishes, butters, sauces and egg dishes.

Basil – one of the most popular herbs used in Italian cooking.
Whether it is fresh or dried, it lends a distinctive flavor,
especially when used in tomato dishes.

PLANNING AN HERB GARDEN !

There are wild Sunflowers growing in the Lettuce patch
and the Radishes have all gone to seed, isn't gardening fun?
I've decided that there needs to be one place in the yard where all the fresh herbs used in cooking can be found and not to have them scattered all over the place.
I now must decide exactly which herb plants to grow.
Tarragon, Rosemary, Garlic, Thyme, Chives, Sage, Mint, Dill, Oregano and Parsley.
Right now the dill growing here is in the Asparagus bed and the Mint is hidden amongst the Raspberry bushes. Last year I planted some Scallions and found I planted way to many for the amount I use. So the best place to locate the herb garden is right out the kitchen door near the end of the ramp. The lawn mower can't get in the area to cut the grass anyway. So this is one more project added to the to do list.

BANANA WAFFLES !

There were three bananas on the banana tree getting all spotted and mushy,
so I decided to mush them up and make some waffles with them.
A couple eggs, water, some vegetable oil and four spoons of Bisquick.
Cooked them up in a dry skillet, using two made a peanut butter sandwich,
they were not bad at all. Served with some vanilla ice cream.

REAL HOME MADE POTATO SALAD !

Our country just went through the holiday of the fourth of July.
I'm sure there were plenty of people that bought some of that
yellowish fat and chemical laden gobally goop that the supermarkets sell.
The stores try to pan it of as potato salad.
It is not that hard to make home made potato salad.
Take half an hour away from your Facebook page and do the job right.
Hard boil some eggs, chop the celery and chives and red onions, boil the potatoes, make your mayonnaise - sour cream dressing with a dash or two of red wine vinegar, toss in a little bit of granulated sugar for the ying-yang flavor balance effect.
Use plenty of fresh dill, serve on a bed of fresh greens and sprinkle with paprika.

ARE EGGS WORTH GETTING PECKED AT ?

Growing up on a farm it was my chore to feed the chickens and collect the eggs.
I even had an egg route to sell our farm fresh eggs throughout the neighbourhood.
Grampa was in the hospital this week so here I am sticking my hand under a hen to collect the eggs again. These birds are mean. Pecking hard enough to draw blood.
I don't remember our chickens years ago doing this.
I've got a blood stain on each of my forearms for each day of the week.
Today I really got it and am thinking how stupid I am for not wearing gloves.

SOYJOY !

Mid-afternoon it’s easy to feel drained, bored and even irritable.
That 3:00 pm slump isn’t just a psychological response
it’s often based in real physiological responses in your body.
It can be easy to reach for something closeby,
office treats, a bag of chips or a candy bar.
But eating snacks high in sugar and low in healthful nutrients
can cause an unhealthy spike and then crash in blood sugar.
SOYJOY®, however, is baked with a delicious combination of whole soy,
real fruit and other all natural ingredients
that are converted to energy gradually by the body,
making it the perfect 3:00 pm snack.

GOODBYE GORDIE THE FARM DOG !

Gordie the farm dog was Grampa's best friend til the end.
Right along Grampas side as he weeded the garden beds.
The dog was a long haired collie like "Lassie" the tv dog.
He lived a long life of eighty or so doggie years.
My two brothers and I visit the farm almost every Saturday,
I was usually the first to arrive and when I opened the door
there was Gordie prancing around the place excited to see me
knowing his two other friends(my brothers)would be there soon.

Well in the past year Gordie has somehow contracted mange
and that is not an easy thing for a dog to go through,
and at his age I'm sure it was really difficult for him.
He itched really bad and lost hair on his ears and even his tail.
Grampa got some "Frontline Plus" dog medicine for him
Gave him a few doggie shampoo baths and he seemed to
improve and be his old Collie farm dog self.
Until about a week ago, that's when he stopped eating.

We tried to put everything dog tasty in front of him.
Even a steak I made for Grampa and me to eat one night.
He would smell it and walk away.
I remembered years ago when I needed to get a cow
to take some medicine that if I stuck it deep
in the mouth and rubbed the chin they had to swallow it.
Putting some meat in his mouth and rubbing his chin
just made a big old drooly mess on the kitchen floor.

The other day Gordie fell asleep in the sun porch,
breathing slightly. Grampa said
"He hopes when Gordie wakes up he can eat something."
This morning Gordie didn't wake up.

CHARTER CABLE TV ADS SUCK !

I've got Charter cable television,
enough with the ads already.
I've opined about this before,
tonight I just saw another of their ads.
Every commercial break they put a Charter tv ad on there.
Wanting for the viewer to subscribe to Charter cable tv.
enough already....
I have to admit that some of the ads are humorous,
but the amount of ads are just annoying,
makes me want to change back to the Dish Network,
but I suppose they have this ad thing down pat too.

TOMATO PLANT LATE BLIGHT !

Tomato plants have been removed from stores in half a dozen states as a destructive and infectious plant disease makes its earliest and most widespread appearance ever in the eastern United States.

Late blight — the same disease that caused the Irish Potato Famine in the 1840s — occurs sporadically in the Northeast, but this year's outbreak is more severe for two reasons: infected plants have been widely distributed by big-box retail stores and rainy weather has hastened the spores' airborne spread.

The disease, which is not harmful to humans, is extremely contagious and experts say it most likely spread on garden center shelves to plants not involved in the initial infection. It also can spread once plants reach their final destination, putting tomato and potato plants in both home gardens and commercial fields at risk.

Meg McGrath, professor of plant pathology at Cornell University, calls late blight "worse than the Bubonic Plague for plants."

"People need to realize this is probably one of the worst diseases we have in the vegetable world," she said. "It's certain death for a tomato plant."
